The Free Money Advice Service has been setup by the government to provide impartial advice on most financial matters but is particularly good on Equity Release.

Equity Release is a minefield but a necessary minefield! Get it right and older people can raise money on their property - potentially allowing them to afford to stay in their homes for the rest of their lives. Get it wrong and they can accumulate an enormous debt and effectively disinherit their children as the finance company claims their home in order to repay the accumulated loan when they die. The link below may help you decide whether this might be a useful route to go down. However just as importantly consider using a financial adviser.
This is a simple AgeUK Equity Release calculator which will help you find out how much an equity release loan would allow you to raise on your house.

12 Market Pl, Durham DH1 3NG, UK – 0345 788 8444

Had appointment to close account to be told it had to be done over the phone anyway because it was a weekend. At least they got me straight through to the right person on the phone

A new express banking system has been installed, it makes for very fast and efficient banking. Staff are extremely helpful.

Atom Bank

The Rivergreen Centre, Durham DH1 5TS, UK – 0333 399 0050

Overall a good starter experience with Atom Bank. Applied for a 1yr fixed savers account and although I had a few issues with the app at first, it worked fine the next day once the initial rush had died down. The rate was not great (as is to be expected given the state of the economy) but was still the best I could find, so full marks there. Where they do lose a star however is for their security. They insist that you set up three different types of login, two of which in my opinion are pretty insecure. The fact that these methods HAVE to be setup means that even if I don't use them myself, they are there for potential fraudsters to exploit. Very disappointing for such a new, tech based bank.

I have just opened a three year bond, no problems this bank came up with best interest rates recommended by Martin Lewis on his showed, government backed so this was the one for me.

Lloyds Bank

19 Market Place, Durham DH1 3NL, UK – 0345 300 0000

Great bank even sorted mine and partners morgage out and other things well recommend

1 Saddler St, Durham DH1 3NR, UK – 0345 740 4404

The bank is larger than the one in Windsor, Surrey. And they have a Premier section, which Windsor does not. So their customer service was shockingly sub par. I was really surprised that the Premier officer on the day did not want to help me even though I am a premier client. I tried to approach their premier guy, but he was on a mission to avoid contact. This is very annoying as HSBC tries very hard to sell its premium brand?! I was really confused. The reason I gave it a 3 star was because the young woman at the counter was the best part of the experience. She deserved a 5 star rating while her premier colleague and the older and less than helpful gentleman at the counter, who was dismissive and not very customer orientated, deserved s zero!. Ms. Kahlbom, brava. And thank you.

With the earlier feedbacks and overall scroe of 1.5 in mind, I was bit skeptic while visiting this branch..but within few minutes it was over. Rapid , methodical and very helpful service, I'd like to mention David's Name.

1 North Rd, Durham DH1 4UQ, UK – 0191 333 1433

Darn tootin! for an added thrill, try and get the American cashier. Other than that this bank is standard in every way.

A small-sized Halifax with all of the amenities expected from a bank of that size. With an automated cash and cheque machine it is perfect for quick deposits.

Mortgage Brokers

Mortgage Brokers in Durham - C&C

Northern Professional, Portland House,, Belmont Business Park, Durham DH1 1TW, UK – 0800 002 9555

I can't thank Roger enough for all the help and assistance he gave my partner and I in securing our first mortgage. We were not at all optimistic about our chances of getting on the housing ladder, especially with all the negative press about banks not lending and the general state of the economy. Our choices were limited, but Roger managed to agree our case with a lesser known lender who charged a slightly higher rate of interest, but even so we are still paying less on our new mortgage than we were in rent at our old place! I honestly wouldn't hesitate to recommend this firm to anyone - very knowledegable and above all else very honest.

Mortgage Brokers - Key Questions

How much do mortgage brokers charge?
Typically, a broker will actually be paid around 0.35% of the mortgage loan as commission from your the lender. So, for every £100,000 borrowed, they would receive £700 in commission - if they are on commission. Many will therefore not charge for their advise if they are. However they maybe tied to specific companies and so may not be able to offer the best deal. Start with your bank. They will know you personally and financially - hopefully! They will tell you about their mortgages and you can use them as a base line to compare products found by mortgage brokers around Durham.

Is it better to get mortgage from bank or broker?
This question will be answered by this initial mortgage research. You may hit it lucky and find that your bank can give you the best deal - but do check with a mortgage broker first.

How do I find a good mortgage broker?
Don't write off the financial comparison websites. Moneysupermarket is full of good advise on how to find mortgage brokers and may even be able to point you around St Johns College that they particularly recommend - although will be on commission themselves! Click the link below to go the the right part of Moneysupermarket.

Are mortgage brokers worth it?
Probably yes and we are not on commission! You are free to the these ones a ring - it could really worth it.

Barclays Bank

6 Market Pl, Durham DH1 3NB, UK – 0345 734 5345

staff was very helpful and quick to answer the phone

Although the staff has been replaced by machines there were still 3 staff members that were available to help out with using these machines, however they are straight forward to use anyway... I went in to authorise my online banking and was in and out in 5-10 minutes with no problems at all. Staff were extremely helpful.

Ben Charles Durham Financial Services

96 Claypath, Durham DH1 1RG, UK – 0191 383 0011

Rachael is our one stop solution for all our mortgage needs. Having no experience, my wife and I struggled quite a bit to find mortgage lenders when we were trying to buy our first property. We're are so glad to have found Rachael at Ben Charles. She not only found us the best deal possible, but went beyond her call of duty to help us with every small detail. She's pro-active, responsive and trustworthy. Really pleased with the way they've looked after us and we're now remortgaging through them again. Highly recommend a call with Rachael if you're looking for a mortgage.

Rachael has been very good and efficient in helping us out in finding the best deals for our mortgages. It was thanks to her that we managed to find an affordable mortgage for the house we wanted to buy and at the same time keep our old house for renting. Besides, this is the only free service of this kind in Durham. The rest of the Ben Charles team is also very good. We would definitely recommend. Thank you!
